PlayyOn

The Tournament Generator

A common request for PlayyOn is the creation and administration of tournaments. Our team was tasked with a rather large feature set to design an automated tournament generator for PlayyOn’s primary user, the administrator.

We began an in-depth heuristic analysis of PlayyOn’s current software to understand the current user flow. From this, we started to look at how we can implement their current methods and improve upon them in our own design decisions going forward.

BRIEF
Create an automated tournament generator for sports admin.

Research

I wanted to know what competitors and leagues were displaying on their websites. From looking at the features of several online sports management tools, I found that none of them were meeting our business goal of keeping things simple and efficient.

While I liked that Tourney Machine and Sports Engine had a lot of awesome features, I found there were too many and got lost in the actual process of creating a tournament.

User Data

Results

  • It is a lot of work to organize the actual tournament schedule and match appropriate teams against each other

  • Scheduling issues — it is difficult to communicate issues the day of if there are any changes (i.e. a team can’t make it)

At this stage, I was able to identify there would be 3 users utilizing the platform, the administrator, the coach and the player. I felt it was most important to focus on our primary user, the administrator; the individual actually facilitating tournaments. The display for our secondary users would consist of a stripped down version of this platform.

Revising the interface -
After I was able to identify the main flows of my user, I wanted to truly understand what would visually appeal to that user.

I had PlayyOn’s current branding and colours to work with, but I found that there were some areas of improvement I could play with. I wanted to find a way to make adjustments that still worked with the current site, but provided a more neutral look and feel.
