BC Ferries

Booking Website Redesign

Camp Pacific was tasked with redesigning the BC Ferries website. Their goals were to create a fluid user experience where customers could go online and prebook their sailings, get a quote or reserve. They also asked us to integrate the BC Ferries Vacations feature, which at the time was a stand alone website. This way users could bundle vacation packages, including ferry, hotel, and activities.

BRIEF
Create mobile and desktop wireframes for category detail pages and 3 separate booking flows on the BC Ferries website.

To get a feel for the project and the users, I began with an in-depth heuristic analysis of content from their current website, as well as some findings from testing and research that the Camp Pacific UX team had done previously.

I followed this research with competitive and comparative analysis, looking at other websites with booking engines (i.e. Expedia, Air Canada, Westjet, etc.) - this is where I discovered the goal of our client was to create a service / experience for users that steered away from the popular belief that BC Ferries is just a utility service and adopt the notion of it being more of a travel company.

Research

I began sketching designs that I shared with the team, implementing proprietary information/content provided by the client.
We wanted to create a simple, seamless and familiar experience across all pages. The team worked closely together to ensure components were consistent. All detail pages shared the same layout of a hero followed by an overview, a map or booking details, followed up related packages and cities.
All booking flows kept consistent, with options to book a pre-bundle package or request a quote.

This project was a rollercoaster learning experience working in an agile team with a hard deadline from the client. I would have liked to be more involved / spent more time with testing and reiterating before the website went into design and development.
